THE PYRAMID OF ASCENT: STAGES OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH

By molly

The spiritual mountain is not climbed with physical feet, but with surrender, devotion, and divine empowerment. The journey of the disciples in Acts 1–2, especially their time in the Upper Room, mirrors a path every believer must take. Think of it as a pyramid—each level represents a stage of growth, drawing us closer to God's heart and purpose.

1. Salvation – The Foundation of New Life

The climb begins with salvation. We step out of darkness and into the light by believing in Jesus.

  • "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

  • "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)

  • "By grace you have been saved through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God..." (Ephesians 2:8–9)

This is not the summit—it's the gate to begin your ascent.

2. The Word of God – Rooted in Truth

Spiritual life needs nourishment. The Word of God is our foundation and food.

  • "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation." (1 Peter 2:2)

  • "Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105)

  • "All Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness..." (2 Timothy 3:16–17)

Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:1). To know Him, we must love His Word.

3. Faith – Believing Beyond Sight

Faith springs from the Word and becomes the fuel of our spiritual walk.

  • "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." (Romans 10:17)

  • "Without faith it is impossible to please God..." (Hebrews 11:6)

  • "We walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7)

But faith is not passive:

  • "Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." (James 2:17)

  • "Faith and actions were working together..." (James 2:22)

  • "The testing of your faith produces perseverance." (James 1:3)

Faith must be exercised, even under trial.

4. Obedience – The Proof of Love

Faith in action becomes obedience, the evidence of love and trust.

  • "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." (John 14:15)

  • "To obey is better than sacrifice." (1 Samuel 15:22)

  • "Only those who do the will of My Father..." (Matthew 7:21)

  • "By faith Abraham obeyed and went..." (Hebrews 11:8)

The disciples obeyed Jesus when He said, "Wait in Jerusalem." Their obedience positioned them for power.

5. Waiting – The Crucible of Transformation

Waiting seems inactive, but it’s deeply transformative.

  • "Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength..." (Isaiah 40:31)

  • "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him..." (Psalm 37:7)

  • "My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning..." (Psalm 130:6)

Like Mary of Bethany:

  • "Mary sat at the Lord’s feet listening... Jesus said, 'She has chosen what is better.'" (Luke 10:39–42)

The Upper Room wasn’t just a waiting room—it was the womb of revival.

6. Impartation – Filled with Fire and Glory

Suddenly, God moved.

  • "A sound like the blowing of a violent wind came... They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire... All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit..." (Acts 2:2–4)

This is impartation—being filled not just with God's presence, but with His power.

  • "The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you..." (Romans 8:11)

  • "The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him: wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord." (Isaiah 11:2)

This is transfiguration. This is fire.

7. Mission – Sent to Carry the Glory

The mountain leads to the world. We ascend to encounter—but we descend to reflect.

  • "You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others." (Matthew 5:14–16)

  • "Go into all the world and preach the gospel..." (Mark 16:15)

  • "As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you." (John 20:21)

The disciples left the Upper Room empowered. We must do the same.

Conclusion: Your Ascent Begins Here

Where are you on the pyramid?

  • Have you begun the journey?

  • Are you feeding on the Word?

  • Are you walking by faith and obeying His voice?

  • Are you waiting with trust?

  • Have you been filled?

  • Are you going into your world as light?

The spiritual mountain is calling. And the view from the top is glory.
