WHEN GOD ROLLS THE STONE: FROM JACOB’S WELL TO THE EMPTY TOMB

By Molly Nzomo,

There is something about stones in Scripture.

They seal.
They block.
They imprison.
They silence.

But every time God is about to release life, He moves the stone.

From a dusty well in Genesis…
To a grieving sister’s tomb in Bethany…
To the sealed grave outside Jerusalem…

The pattern is undeniable.

The Stone at the Well — A Love Story Begins

Genesis 29 introduces us to a well covered by a large stone. Shepherds waited until everyone gathered before rolling it away. It was heavy. It was immovable. It was tradition.

Then Jacob arrives.

He sees Rachel.

And something happens.

Without waiting.
Without assistance.
Without delay.

Jacob rolls the stone away by himself and waters her sheep.

This was not just strength.
This was love in action.

The stone that blocked water — the source of life — was removed because a bride was present.

Water flowed.
A covenant began.
A love story unfolded.

But this was more than romance.

It was prophecy.

The Stone at the Tomb — A Friend Restored

Centuries later, another stone appears.

This time it seals a tomb.

Lazarus is dead. Four days gone. The stone is not just heavy — it is final. It represents decay, hopelessness, and the end.

Jesus stands before it and commands:

“Take away the stone.”

Objections rise.
Doubt speaks.
Fear protests.

But when the stone is removed…

Life comes out.

The grave could not hold what God called forth.

Stone removed.
Life released.

The Stone at the Grave — Death Defeated

Then comes the ultimate stone.

Jesus Himself lies in a tomb. Sealed. Guarded. Watched.

Humanity believes the story is over.

But Heaven never panics.

An angel descends.
The earth shakes.
The stone is rolled away.

Not to let Jesus out.
But to let the world see that death had already lost.

The stone that symbolized finality became a seat for an angel.

What was meant to imprison life became a platform for victory.

The Pattern We Cannot Ignore

Look closely:

  • At the well — a stone blocked water.

  • At Lazarus’ tomb — a stone blocked life.

  • At Jesus’ grave — a stone blocked resurrection.

And every time…

God moved it.

Stones in Scripture represent obstacles, traditions, fear, death, impossibility, and sealed destinies.

But God has a history of rolling stones.

The Bride and the Stone

Do you see the deeper thread?

At the well, Jacob rolls the stone away for his bride.

At the resurrection, Jesus rolls the stone away to secure His Bride — the Church.

Jacob removed a stone so water could flow.

Jesus removed a stone so living water could flow to all mankind.

Jacob labored for Rachel.

Jesus conquered death for us.

The well led to marriage.
The tomb led to eternal covenant.

This is not coincidence.
This is divine design.

What Stone Is Over Your Life?

Maybe your stone is:

  • A closed opportunity.

  • A delayed promise.

  • A diagnosis.

  • A betrayal.

  • A generational pattern.

  • A spiritual dryness.

It feels sealed.
Heavy.
Untouchable.

But hear this:

The same God who moved the stone at the well…
The same Jesus who commanded, “Take away the stone”…
The same power that shook the earth on resurrection morning…

Has not lost His strength.

God removes stones before He releases life.

The Conviction

Sometimes the stone is not the problem.

Sometimes we are standing in front of it, grieving what God is about to resurrect.

Martha focused on the smell of death.
Jesus focused on the glory of God.

The shepherds waited for help.
Jacob moved the stone anyway.

The soldiers sealed the grave.
Heaven broke the seal.

What if your stone is not a barrier…
But a stage for God’s glory?

The Invitation

Don’t worship at the stone.
Don’t build a house around what feels sealed.
Don’t call permanent what God calls temporary.

Stones move when heaven speaks.

And when they do:

Water flows.
The dead rise.
Covenants begin.
Brides are revealed.
Destiny steps out of tombs.

From Genesis to the Gospels, one truth echoes:

When God rolls the stone, life cannot stay buried.
